NASA’s Clean Air Study was led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in collaboration with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America. The results suggest that common indoor plants may be a natural method to remove harmful substances such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene out of the air, which can help reduce the symptoms of sick building syndrome.

NASA released the first list of air-filtering plant names in 1989 as part of their study of clean air. This study focused on ways to cleanse space station air. Apart from taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, which every plant does, these plants also eliminate substantial amounts of benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. The third and second lists are taken from the B. C. Wolverton’s work and book and concentrate on the elimination of specific chemical compounds.

NASA researchers have suggested that efficient air purification can be achieved with at least one plant for every 100 square feet of home or office space. Another study has revealed that microorganisms living in the potter’s mix (soil) of a potted plant remove benzene from the air and that certain plant species are also able to remove benzene.
