Why would bad things not happen to good people? Or, more simply and crudely put, “Shit happens”.
Bad things happen for the same reasons that anything happens - the same laws of nature that underlie all causes and effects.
There is nothing special about the causation of natural things that we humans judge as “bad” (we exclude human-caused harm).
Searching for reasons why adversity has befallen us is often futile. Asking “What is the purpose of the universe?” is like asking what the purpose of the sky is, or a mountain, or a hurricane, or a tsunami.
