Energy Gradients

As physicist Lawrence Krauss pointed out (as well as Hawking and Mlodinow), the total energy of our universe is zero.

Complex life is only possible due to existence of local energy gradients like the Sun which supplement energy to turn entropy (chaos) into complex order.
